Cyclamen - a beautiful houseplant from October to March

Cyclamen are a genus of plants which has approx 20 species, which are part of the family of Primulaceae, the Primrose family. In the wild, they grow naturally in the Mediterranean, being native to parts of Europe, western Asia and parts of North Africa.

Blooming period

Cyclamen are traditionally sold during the Christmas season and into the winter as a house plant. Most will bloom from early October through to February March time, provided you give them the right conditions.

 Light

Cyclamen like good light at all times.

Temperature

Cyclamen prefer cool temperatures. A cool with with good light conditions is ideal.

Water

Plants prefer to dry out between waterings. They can be watered from the top - but keep moisture away from the area on the tuber where the leaf and flower stems grow. If that gets wet, the plant may rot – or from the base. If watering from the base allow the plant to stand in water for approx 20 minutes and them remove any excess water. NEVER LEAVE STANDING PERMANENTLY IN WATER.

 Dormant stage

In late winter, early spring the cyclamens finish blooming and the leaves turn yellow as the plants go dormant. Cyclamens may be put outdoors for the summer, and allowed to rest, bring back inside in September. Repot and and give a drink they'll usually start forming new leaves and flower buds again soon.

Feeding

Feed about twice a month with a liquid food, such as Miracle Gro or Phostrogen.

Dead Heading

There's a right way to dead head old flower stems and leaves. With one hand, steady the plant at soil level. With the other, reach in and pull off the aging stem with a swift tug and the base of the stem will come away cleanly.
